Amy Abbott, initial thoughts

This is my first post on the theme connect, I have been avoiding thinking about it as initially I thought i would really struggle to understand this theme and how i would draw influence from my current practice which is a feminist practice exploring social stereotyping of female sexuality. so I decided to carry on with my own personal work as normal.

Before Christmas I had been reading Angela Carter’s Bloody Chambers, Carter writes women at different stages  of there sexual development such as puberty, virginity, romance and se with no social boundaries.  The story of wolf Alice specifically stuck in my mind and I started drawing sketches of women in animalistic poses, I like the naiviety of the wolf alice maturing and getting to know who she is physically and emotionally.

From these sketches I realised showing similarities between humans and animal instincts will be the focus of this body of work. Therefore my connect theme will be to explore the similarities between animal and human characteristics, specifically focusing on sex as a natural act rather than contrived by social expectations. I want to show women connecting, discovering themselves.

Here are a few of my initial sketches.

I’ve seen some great art using the connection between wolf and woman. My favourite being Kiki Smiths drawings and sculpture:
