People thought the days had been stolen from them’

Both Nicola Anthony and myself find it comical that we’ve found such elaborate methods for keeping a diary; we chose to use this as a starting point for a dialogue that would inform our concept. I find it interesting that calendars and diaries are used as a way to visualize something as transient as time, and which leaves a written ‘imprint’ of how we have been passing that time.

Considering other scenarios in which time passing is visually illustrated or made more notable I remembered the height charts that my mum kept on the doorframe for my sister and I. A correlation between our height and our age… looking back at a pencil mark on the wall from when I was under 3ft it’s hard not to think – where did all that time go! As Nicole put “I still remember the feeling of my back pressed against the wall and a pencil moving side to side on top of my head where the mark was being made”

Totem poles are traditionally built to acknowledge the history and accomplishments of a family. This totem pole of a painting acknowledges visually through 5ft 2, my own height, the amount of time and experience I have existed through. It has also introduced me to a completely different way of constructing and curating a wall piece such as a painting. I like the structure, order and the visual presence of this piece.
